After the initial period you will typically transition to nighttime-only wear. For long-term results, many recommend wearing the retainer indefinitely a few nights a week, as teeth can naturally shift with time.

Rinse your retainer with lukewarm (never hot) water each time you remove them. Brush them with a soft brush gently using mild dish soap or a retainer cleaner. Do not use alcohol -based mouthwash, bleach, or hot water as these can warp the material.

You should replace your retainer if you notice it feels loose or doesn’t fit properly. If it has visible cracks your clear retainer will no longer be effective. If your clear retainer is discoloured or has an unpleasant smell even after cleaning it can indicate bacteria buildup. The normal lifespan of clear retainers is about 6 months to 3 years. Factors like improper care and oral habits such as teeth grinding can decrease its lifespan.
