Sports Mouthguards

The purpose of a mouthguard is to protect your teeth, tongue, gums, lips, and cheeks from injury. Wearing mouthguards is advised in two situations: when grinding their teeth and when doing certain physical activities.

An arch-shaped molded thermoplastic material designed specifically for the sports mouthguard fits over the top teeth. Sports mouthguards protect the mouth & face in several ways, including protection of the upper and lower teeth from facial impacts or blows.

Sports mouthguards function as shock absorbers when you suffer a direct blow to your jaw or teeth, distributing and absorbing the force.

The overall injury risk was 1.5 to 2 times greater when a sports mouthguard was not worn during athletic activity, according to a 2007 study that evaluated the effectiveness of sports mouthguard.

When you get struck in the mouth or jaw, a sports mouthguard helps redistribute the impact's force. It also acts as a layer between your teeth and the soft tissues in and around your mouth. In several sports accidents, mouthguards have been found to help prevent chipped or broken teeth and protect against cuts to lips, gums, and other soft tissues around the mouth.

The lifespan of a sports guard varies depending on the type of sport and how often you play it. Usually, they last two to three seasons. The more impacts they absorb, the shorter the lifespan. 

Repetitive use of a sports mouthguard will eventually result in a different fit. As mouthguards wear down over time, it is recommended to replace them after each season.

Moreover, adolescents must regularly replace their mouthguards since their mouths and teeth continue to develop into adulthood, so the fit might also change.

Mold, bacteria, strep, and staph easily invade mouth guards during normal use.

When not in use, store it in a case

The case will extend the life of your mouthguard and prevent it from getting damaged. And especially if you carry your mouth guard to and from practice in a gym bag, the case will also prevent it from getting dirty from bacteria.

The mouth guard should be stored in a perforated case to allow for air circulation but firm enough to prevent damage. Make sure the mouth guard (and case!) is dry before closing the case.

After each use, clean thoroughly

A simple mouthguard cleaning procedure won't take much time or effort. Scrub it gently with your toothbrush and warm water before bedtime, and let it dry naturally.

Injuries caused by sports can be reduced with the use of a sports mouthguard. In sporting or recreational activities that pose a high risk of injury or dental trauma, sport mouthguards are recommended to minimize the severity of the injury.

It has been demonstrated that an effective mouthguard can minimize the risk of jaw fractures, concussions, neck injuries, and cerebral hemorrhages during contact sports.
