How long must retainers be worn?

It is common for bone and tissue surrounding a tooth to become damaged during tooth movement, leaving gaps in the teeth. Retainers prevent this damage. After active treatment ends, patients should wear retainers for best results. With the exception of eating, drinking, or cleaning their teeth, this means wearing them all day and night

How often should I clean my retainer?

Thermoplastic and wire-bound Hawley retainers are the most common types of retainers. Both are delicate and require daily cleaning and washing. If you do not care properly for your retainers, it limits their life expectancy. If you don't care well for your retainers, they can damage the straightening process of your teeth.

Follow these simple steps to keep your retainers clean. Before placing your retainers back in your mouth, you should always wash them. After eating, brush your teeth and your retainers to ensure that no food particles are trapped between them.

Do retainers last forever?

Not at all. Removable retainers often become loose over time and fall off the teeth. Fixed retainers can also break.

Whatever type of retainer you have, it is important to maintain it properly. Your removable retainers should be cleaned and made sure that they fit properly during your professional teeth cleaning visit.

The lifespan of a clear retainer is generally one to three years. That of a Hawley retainer is between two and eight years.

How long do I need to wear retainers?

The retainer will only have to be worn during the night for a full year. After that, you may take a couple of nights off from wearing them each week. To maintain your teeth's position for as long as possible, we recommend continually wearing your retainers.

How to take care of retainers?

The importance of maintaining your retainer cannot be overstated, as you must maintain it consistently if you want it to last for a long time. Maintaining your retainer properly also protects your smile results. Here are some tips on how to take care of your retainers after braces:

Always carry your retainer case with you while on the go.
Always place your retainer back into its case after removing it.
The simplest way to lose your retainer is to put it in a napkin.
Keep your retainer away from hot water and heat, which can warp it.
Pets and children should not have access to your retainers.
Alcohol, bleach, and heavy chemicals can damage plastic, so don't use them.
