Partial Denture FAQ

What are partial dentures?

Dentures that replace multiple teeth in your upper or lower mouth are called partial dentures.

Wearing partial dentures can enhance chewing and speech for the wearer, as well as preserve the placement of your remaining teeth, which may otherwise shift over time.

It's recommended that partial dentures be removed at night so that they can be cleaned. Partial dentures shouldn't be worn 24 hours a day.

What are different types of partial dentures?

A partial denture can be made in a variety of forms. The dentist will recommend the best option, but it is the wearer's final decision.

Acrylic partial dentures

Generally, These dentures are also relatively inexpensive, so patients can use them for a few years and easily purchase new ones when needed.

Flexible partial denture

For those who are uncomfortable with cast metal or acrylic partial dentures or suffer from allergies due to materials, flexible partial dentures are an excellent option. Using a thermo injection technique, this type of partial is molded to fit accurately over your gum tissue. Without metal clasps, the appearance is very natural, and the level of comfort is high.

Nesbit partial dentures

Nesbit partial dentures replace 1 or 2 teeth on a wearer's one side. A Nesbit partial denture is made with the same material as the full flexible partial denture just with a minimal material design.

How should a partial denture fit?

Regardless of whether the partial denture is on the upper or lower side, the front or back should fit snugly and comfortably. Lower partial dentures must be fitted tightly based on an accurate impression of your teeth in order to create suction, whereas upper partial dentures should have a tight seal that creates an ample amount of suction also.

How long do partial dentures last?

You can expect a quality set of partial dentures to last you for about 3-8 years. As we age, our jaws change shape due to bone loss, requiring us to make new partial dentures. Annually, the cost is negligible, but you should visit your dentist once a year or two to ensure the partial dentures fit properly.

If you lose more teeth before your current partial dentures need replacement, you will need to purchase new ones.

How long should I wear a partial denture?

Wearing a partial denture all the time might cause temporary discomfort. However, it identifies the areas that require adjustment. When dentures put too much pressure on a particular area, your partial dentures will need to bel adjusted to fit more comfortably. Once adjustments have been made, they should feel comfortable.

What to expect when getting partial dentures?

It might take a couple days for you to adjust to wearing your new partial dentures. In the first one to two days after getting partial dentures, you may feel discomfort, and your speech and eating may change temporarily. Your mouth, tongue, and facial muscles will adapt to these changes as time goes on.

How can I care for my removable partial dentures?

Partial dentures can be cleaned using a soft dentur brush, but you must use the right cleaning solution. Whenever the denture is not in use, soak it in water or a denture cleaning solution to keep it in its original shape. Toothpaste is not recommended for these appliances.

How do I know if I need partial dentures?

If your natural teeth are still strong and you still have some existing teeth, you will need partial dentures instead of complete dentures. It is recommended to speak with your dentist to be sure you are a good candidate for partial dentures.
